Woodpeckers Subspecies

In a previous post I had trouble telling the difference between hairy and downy woodpeckers. It seems clearer in these photos that this is a downy woodpecker, mainly because it has a black tail and it is much smaller than the hairy woodpecker. We guess that it also has white feathers with black spots behind its black tail and a small beak. It is male because it has the red patch on the back of its head.

On the contrary, those woodpeckers have white spots on their black tails. Their beak is about the length of their head. They are bigger in size and they have black legs.

Hairy woodpeckers (bird number 19!)

Photos are taken in the Olentangy River Trail area in Columbus, Ohio.
