More to come

36. Red-tailed hawk

First hawk. Caught in flight.

35. House Finch

This is a male house finch. It is very similar to the male purple finch, but you can tell the difference by the bill. The bill of the house finch is curved downwards whereas the bill of the purple finch is conical shaped. I will post a purple finch when I find one for comparison.

Photos are taken in Olentangy River Trail. Interesting fact: 160 species of birds have been sighted in the Olentangy River Trail area. So, there is more to come!

Erwin - Tennessee

30. Common Grackle

29. Turkey Vulture

My first bird of prey. It feeds almost exclusively on dead animals.

As most vultures it has few or no feathers on the head. The adult's head is small in proportion to its body and red.

28. Great Blue Heron

Caught on flight over the Nolichucky River in TN.

It is found in grasslands, vacant fields or along railroads. It has a very distinctive call.

26. Carolina Chickadee

It could also be a Black-capped Chickadee, which is identical to the Carolina Chickadee, except in song.

Woodpeckers Subspecies

In a previous post I had trouble telling the difference between hairy and downy woodpeckers. It seems clearer in these photos that this is a downy woodpecker, mainly because it has a black tail and it is much smaller than the hairy woodpecker. We guess that it also has white feathers with black spots behind its black tail and a small beak. It is male because it has the red patch on the back of its head.

On the contrary, those woodpeckers have white spots on their black tails. Their beak is about the length of their head. They are bigger in size and they have black legs.

Hairy woodpeckers (bird number 19!)
